Dance Costume Size Guide

Accurate measurements are the key to finding the perfect fit. Use this guide alongside each listing's specific measurements.

Important:Sizes vary significantly between brands and manufacturers. Always check the seller's specific measurements listed on each costume rather than relying solely on the labeled size. These charts are a general reference only.

Measurement Guide

How to Measure

Use a soft measuring tape for the most accurate results.

Bust

Measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping the tape level and snug but not tight. For children who have not developed, measure across the chest at armpit level.

Waist

Measure around the natural waistline — the narrowest part of the torso, typically just above the belly button. Have the dancer bend to the side to find the natural crease.

Hip

Measure around the fullest part of the hips and seat, typically 7-9 inches below the waist. Stand with feet together for the most accurate measurement.

Girth

Start at the top of one shoulder, run the tape down the front of the body, through the legs (crotch), and back up to the same shoulder. This is the most important measurement for leotards and unitards.

Inseam

Measure from the crotch seam straight down to the desired length (ankle or floor). Essential for unitards, biketards, and any costume with legs.

Torso Length

Measure from the top of the shoulder straight down to the bottom of the torso (where the leg seam would be on a leotard). Helpful for assessing overall fit of one-piece costumes.

Tips for Accurate Measurements

  • Measure over form-fitting clothing or undergarments — not over bulky layers.
  • Keep the measuring tape flat against the body, snug but not pulling.
  • Have the dancer stand naturally with arms relaxed at their sides.
  • Measure twice to confirm accuracy before comparing to a listing.
  • Write measurements down immediately — it's easy to forget which was which.
  • If between sizes, most dance costumes are stretchy — choose the smaller size if the costume has good stretch.
